We have recently seen one nuthatch chick being fed by both parents on the wall by the river and this was followed by the male blackbird being kept busy feeding three chicks (unfortunately he lost his partner). The robins also produced two young, but this year we haven't seen the kingfisher.

August 15th

This afternoon we celebrated the arrival of the newlywed happy couple Jodie and James with chilled Prosecco at Beck Allans. We had fresh flowers throughout and Jodie and James had breakfast in the Conservatory. We wish them all the best and hope they have a long and happy married life together. xx

June 21st - Long day in the sun

Yesterday was the longest day and it was sunshine all the way - even the young rabbits were in the garden laid on their backs after eating most of my flowers!!
In the evening we were sat out watching the pink clouds drifting across Helm Crag and listening to the gentle ripple of the River Rothay close by - perfect.

Heard the cuckoo today!!

May Events - An evening of fashion by Mouse will be held in the Wordsworth Hotel on 6th May 2010, starting at 19:30 for 20:00. Tickets cost £8 and includes a glass of wine and canapes, raffle and open bar. Hosted by Grasmere WI who are raising money for, 'The Great North Air Ambulance'. Tickets available from The Wordsworth Hotel.
May Events - Hawkshead Church is the venue for the Ambleside Choral Society, who will be perfoming Vivaldi: Gloria; McDowall: Magnificat; Handel: Anthem for the foundling Hospital. Tickets cost £7.50 which includes wine, and can be purchased at the door, from members of the choir in advance or ring 015394 35041. Takes place on the 8th May 2010 at 19:30.
May Events - Wordsworth Trust Poetry Readings at 18:45 in St Oswald's Church. 11th May 2010 sees the launch of Chase Twichell and Andrew Forster's new collections. Tickets cost £7/£8, season tickets can also be purchased. Readings followed up with a two course meal at the Dale Lodge Hotel for £17 to £19 includes a glass of wine. Bookings call 015394 35544
May Events - Debate on controversial topics will be chaired by Prof. David Jackman in the Tithe Barn on the 12th May 2010, starting at 19:30. Topics covered in this particular debate are voluntary euthanasia, assisted suicide for those suffering from degenerative diseases where no medical treatment is possible. Abolishing poverty by increases in taxation at the upper levels or are there other possible ways to achieve this. Is God a shared vision for Christians, Jews and Muslims, and should we be putting them in a complementary relationship. Other topics that will be covered are the New Single Equality Act, as well as the Ofsted ruling which would affect all those working with children.

June Events - Lakeland Composers Concert organised by Cumbrian Composer Chris Gibbs. St Oswald's on Sunday 27th June at 14:30.
July Events - Keldwyth Award Society which is a musical scholarship awarded to an outstanding young musician from Cumbria, every year, have organised the Keldwyth Preliminary Round in St Oswald's on the 19th July. Recipients are selected by competition in two stages, with the preliminary competition taking place in Grasmere at St Oswald's Church in July. Those selected perform a 10-12 minute programme in public in front of three judges whose task it will be to select four competitors to go forward to the final stage of the competition.
July Events - Grasmere Rushbearing is to be held on Saturday 24th July 2010. There will be a new format this year focussing on families and childrens entertainment, which means there is no longer any sports on the sports field, due to the change in demographic of those participating and partaking.
August Events - Wordsworth Summer School has organised Poetry Reading by Seamus Heaney on Sunday 1st August in St Oswald's. Starts at 20:30.

Aladdin Pantomime Production performed by the Grasmere Players will be held on the 17th, 18th and 19th December 2009 at 7:30pm in the village hall. There is also a matinee on Saturday 19th December 2009 at 2:30pm also in the village hall. Tickets are £6 for adults and £3 for children. Tickets can be purchased from Barneys Newsagent during opening hours.

November Events - Sunday the 8th November 2009 is Remembrance Day, there will be a service at the War Memorial in the park, followed by refreshments in the Village Hall. Begins after the 10:55am service in St Oswald's Church.

November Events - Sir Geoffrey Bindman will be talking about the radical author, publisher and bookseller, Daniel Isaac Eaton (1970), on the 14th November 2009 at the Wordsworth Trust.

November Events - Grasmere School is holding a fundraising event on the 18th November 2009, titled Bodyshop Party, this will be held at the school. Open to all and should be fun.

November Events - On the 21st November 2009, the Wordsworth Trust are holding an exhibition entitled, 'A History of Dove Cottage'. Tells the story of Dove Cottage and the occupants during and after the Wordsworths residency.

November Events - 'Dora Wordsworth: A Poet's Daughter', the first full publication of Wordsworth's favourite Daughter is being launched by Olena Beal, on the 28th November 2009 at 2pm. Followed by readings and music at 3:30pm.

Weather Update

Drizzle has stopped, now have patches of blue sky which appears to be increasing. Dry with almost no wind in the village. Forecast from Mountain Weather is that it should remain dry until this evenming with some drizzle, but tommorrow Sunday should be fine and dry.

June Events - An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley, Grasmere Players Summer Play running from the 3rd June through to 2nd July 2009. Wednesday and Thursdays at 20:00 in Grasmere Village Hall.
June Events - Grasmere Gallop on the 14th June 2009 @ 10:45. Entry Fees £10.00 for main race and £5.00 for fun run.
June Events - Garden Fete on the 20th June 2009 between 14:00 - 16:00, to be held in the Rectory Garden and Tithe Barn.
July Events - The Wizard of Oz, Grasmere Schools Production on the 9th and 10th July 2009.

Tonight we have Pat & Penny Fleming staying with us. Pat is cycling the Lands' End to John O'Groats route to help raise money for the Garden Route Children's Trust.

Beck Allans Guest House

We have decided to start a blog for Beck Allans Guest House, to keep guests informed and updated with current issues, weather, developments, events, videos and guest feedback.

This blog can be used by guests to inform us about their feedback, positive points from their stay, or negative points, and just generally to interact with us through blogging if they so wish.

Here are some pictures of our rooms in the Guest House.

These two rooms are located on the first floor. The first picture is of the 4-poster room which has magnificent views over the River Rothay and towards Alcock Tarn. The other room is a superior room which affords guests plenty of space and the room is made lighter by the ornate little window which can be seen to the left of the bed.

The room above is a standard room which also has a view over the River Rothay, although the room is located on the second floor, it really is a sight when the river floods, and for some guests, they have said it was like being near the coast. The other room is another superior room on the second floor, as you can see the furniture is the only real difference, a darker mahogany. There is another room, but we decided not to add that one due to space issues.

Current Issues

The red squirrels have survived the winter and some young ones can be seen near Red Bank.

Developments & Events

The Waterside Hotel in Grasmere is currently undergoing a major renovation and revamp, this is due to last for a number of months.
May Events - Ceilidh in Grasmere Village Hall on the 27th May 2009 @ 19:30. £5 Adults, £3 Children, all welcome.
